Re: Please do not meet Annette Lu from Taiwan
Honorable Congressman DeLay/Lee or Mayor White:
I am a constituent of your district (or city) and I have learned that Annette Lu, vice president of Taiwan, would have a ¡°stop over¡± in Houston this weekend, and you were reportedly plan to have a meeting with her. I strongly urge you not to greet her at all.
For the past five years, Ms. Lu¡¯s policies have brought more problems to the people of Taiwan, caused escalating tension across Taiwan Strait, and may bring our country to a military conflict with China, should she continues to pursue independence. She discriminates against ¡°mainlanders¡± who or whose parents migrated to Taiwan half a century ago. She changed the education system and stopped Taiwanese children from learning Chinese history. She advocates constitutional amendment to unilaterally change the status of Taiwan. And she wants to replace all company names that contain the word of ¡°China¡± with ¡°Taiwan¡±. Even worse, one year ago, she and Mr. Chen Shuibian staged an assassination attempt that helped them win the election due to sympathy votes. Today, New York Times calls it ¡°the sort of story once found in dime store novels.¡±
Lu¡¯s agenda poses grave danger to Taiwan, to East Asia, as well as to the United States. As she continues to sever historical and cultural ties between the mainland and the island, tensions between the two sides grow. China is currently proposing anti-secession legislation, which is a forced reaction to Lu¡¯s ever-provocative policies. Your planned meeting (as reported) would be viewed as a support to her unilateral policy and it will embolden her to take even more aggressive approach, which will inevitably bring the U.S. to the conflict.
The overwhelming majority of Chinese Americans consider both the mainland and Taiwan are integral parts of a country. It has nothing to do with political ideology. If Taiwan stops pursuing independence, the Taiwan Strait will remain calm and peaceful. It is not to our national interest to spend taxpayer¡¯s hard-earned dollars and even risk American lives to protect Taiwan¡¯s independence. Again, I urge you not to meet Annette Lu and I expect your wise decision.
